with the majority of voters? >> i think they can. i think they have. the rubios and the ryans and the cruzes are more connected to where people really live. i'm not saying this president is unattractive and people want to continue watching believe that he could unite, but at every turn, he does not unite. he does divide. we're going backwards in the sense of we're identifying by our color and our gender and our income and our region. and it's just -- i would argue that the democrats have moved away from the mainstream way more than the republicans have. and i keep coming back to the state argument. they will -- we are coming up on a midterm. we have a number of democrats that have won in states. the majority of them that mitt romney won by double digitses. with the possible exception of north carolina. those democrats that are in the senate, the senate's not done its job. the house republicans have passed a budget. the senate has not passed a budget since obamacare was passed. those senate democrats that were just elected like heidi heitkamp or claire mccaskill, they're not going to support

. >> when you look at the options out there, president obama's budget proposal and paul ryan's offer, they both don't do what guys like you say need to be done, balancing the budget for a long time. now you guys have a proposal or you're coming with a proposal that says you'll balance a budget in ten years. i asked paul ryan this and i can't get an answer -- how? because it's going to hurt. >> there are new baselines now in the budget. obviously we just -- as we know, some of the difficulty and the differences in washington are centered around the method of accounting, whether it's static or dynamic. because static, when you raise taxes, that additional taxes because of the cliff deal, that adjusts the baseline. that is going to make the numbers look somewhat differently. right? and we veal to make some choices, no question about it. but we have committed to putting a budget out there that will actually bring it to balance within ten years. >> there's fot got sob some big change -- >> we haven't seen the numbers yet but i'm telling you this added baseline adjustment, because of the r

republican vice president nominee paul ryan. he talks about the future of the republican party. representative ryan spoke saturday at a conference hosted by the national review institute. this is about 25 minutes. >> all right, ladies and gentlemen, we are about to hear from our next speaker who is congressman paul ryan. [applause] when congressman ryan was picked as mitt romney's running mate last year, he became a subject of fascination. everything about him, extending even to his workout routine which is the p90x workout routine. and for those of you who aren't fit enough to have a workout routine, it sounds like it's some advanced piece of military weaponry -- [laughter] or if you happen not to work out an hour every day before breakfast, the p90x, from what i understand, involves this whole theory is you confuse your muscles, as they call it, by constantly trying a new and different workout every day. and we have evidence that paul ryan is very loyal to this workout regime because, actually, his most innovative workout has been caught on tape and broadcast very broadly. i'

director, standing by at that meeting in charlotte where ryan previs was elected to a second term. harsh words from jindal about his own party, to his own party. i heard a little laughter, maybe nervous. how were his comments received? >> i got to tell you, in some ways that speech by bobby jindal was a call to arms for conservatism, at the same time erin, i think it might have been a campaign speech. overall the theme of it was well-received. i think republicans are very frustrated about what happened in the november election. they were not very happy with mitt romney as a candidate at the very end. and of course, some of those ridiculous comments that we heard such as legitimate rape from some senate candidates were very damaging to the party. so right now republicans here in charlotte spent the last couple of days talking about how to recalibrate their message and this is their goal, try to reach out to minority voters and young voters, the new chairman says he's going to put a plan together. we'll see fit works. >> interesting. it's going to take them a few months to do it and the ne

will that go over? >> reporter: by the way, i can tell that you alec baldwin and rob ryan letter present him with that award. if anybody deserves a lifetime achievement award it is dick van dyke. he has been in this game for more than 50 years. he does have a personal connection with the s.a.g. awards, too, miguel, because he met his wife here at the screen actors guild awards. so it's been a pretty good run at the s.a.g. awards for him a special night for him. i have a little bit of breaking news i can leave you with. one of the nominees tonight, we have learned, tommy lee jones, nominated for best supporting actor for his role as thaddius stevens in "lincoln" will not be here because, like many americans, he has come down with a really bad case of the flu. he has got whatever's been going around. i know so many people that have been, you know, strucken with that. he is one of them, won't be here and he could very well win as well. >> nischelle turn, thank you very much you look lovely as ever. have fun out there. >> thank you. >> we will have more on the man who spent 50 years making you l

like paul ryan sharing a committee at a young age coming up with innovations and new ideas. i think, one, that they should -- the democrats should get rid of that seniority system and have the best qualified. you get someone who understands financing, well, they should serve on the budget committee, but, yeah, definitely, have term limits on the united states senate and house of representatives like the president so that we can keep coming up with new ideas. >> take forever to get there, of course. constitutional amendment is not an easy thing. >> a seven year process, but worth it. >> all right. don, thank you very much. stay there, please. i say the show, downton abbey is bad for the left because it portrays the left in a bad lite, and the left make fun of me for what i've been saying. this is next. >> the popularity of this show proves that america loves rich guys, the same way the popularity of "breaking bad" proves that america loves meth dealers. >> announcer: you never know when, but thieves can steal your identity and turn your life upside down. >> hi. >> hi. you know, i can

to be an orphan. he certainly has had an opportunity to bring forward a budget or bring up the ryan budget. he's been in a leadership position. he's leaving the senate without fiscal responsibility. they are the ones that haven't passed a budget in over 1,000 days and counting. >>gretchen: wasn't he on the -- was he on one of the super committees or the debt commission? was he on that particular commission to try to come up with a bipartisan plan? >> you know, i apologize. i wasn't on it. ryan was. the fact is, though, that that committee came up with a mixture of tax increases which we've had and spending cuts which we haven't had and haven't had any cooperation with democrats in the senate to begin doing. what you saw, just before we left for the district work period for various activities like meeting with world economic leaders here in davos is we moved it 90 days so we could attempt one more time to pass a budget, something that would allow us to let public and private leaders around the world have confidence in what our spending is going to be and that in fact we're going to pay our debt
